What does Jesus call us to pray for?

Luke 11:1-13 Sermon Notes

Intro - Prayer

Overview -

A Model of Prayer:  commonly referred to as the Lord’s Prayer.

A Teaching on Prayer:

A Contrast - Luke 13:5-10 - The reluctant Neighbor

vs. 9 - And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

The Heavenly Father longs to hear the voice of His children.

A Comparison - Luke 13:11-13 - Good gifts - The Holy Spirit

vs. 13 -  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

A Fortiori - argumentation that begins with an accepted fact then follows with a conclusion of even greater logical necessity.    Granted the first fact the subsequent conclusion is more certain and inescapable still.   “If … how much more …”. (The Method and Message of Jesus Teaching, Robert Stein, p.20).

The Heavenly Father longs to give good gifts - The Holy Spirit.

My Problem

James 4:2-4 — You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

What is the Holy Spirit going to do?   Glorify  Jesus.

John 16:14 -  He (the Holy Spirit) will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

The Holy Spirit

1) causes us to be born again by glorifying Jesus in our hearts and minds.

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.

Believers we are eternally in-dwelt with the Holy Spirit.

I Corinthians 6:18-20 - 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?

2)  wants to anoint us for ministry.

Hosting the Presence, Bill Johnson, p.137

John 1:32 - And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.

Luke 4:18 - 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
