John 14:18-31 Sermon Notes
John 14:25-27 - 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Three major themes in this series of teaching:
Glorification, Departure and Love.
Two gifts that will be given because of his departure.
1. Presence of the Holy Spirit -
the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name
The Helper - Paraclete - para - alongside, comes alongside of us to help us, be our advocate and guide.
2. Peace of Jesus - my peace I give to you
John 14:27 - 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Not as the World - Not Circumstances, Not Denial.
Worldly Peace - freedom from disturbance.
My Peace - Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Peace with God - Romans 5:1 - Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Peace with One Another - Romans 14:17-19 - For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
Peace with Our Own Soul - Romans 15:13 - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
How do we gain the Peace of Jesus? Believe and Know
Believe - pisteuo - believe, have faith, trust.
John 14:29 - And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.
The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, by which we become the Righteousness of God.
Know - ginosko - knowledge based on personal, relational experience.
John 14:19-20 — Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
How do we Know the Peace of Jesus?
In many and various ways.
