Intro - What doe it mean to be Chosen?
Story of Evan and “Ish kebob!”
John 15:16 - You did not choose me, but I chose you
Apostle Paul’s Argument:
State the Fact
Support with Scripture
Deduce Doctrine
Abraham:
Fact - For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring (vs.6,7).
Scripture - but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” (vs.7 and Genesis 21:12)
Doctrine - This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.(vs.8)
Issac:
Fact - And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac (vs.11)
Scripture - she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” (vs.12,13 and Genesis 25:23 & Malachi 1:3)
Doctrine - —in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— (vs.11)
1. Context - Paul is in anguish over unbelieving Jews.
Jews by birth but not Jews by belief.
Christian by baptism but not by belief.
2. Hindsight - The Doctrine of Election/Predestination
is only discussed in hindsight.
My Salvation is not really my salvation but His salvation in my life!
3. Joy - The Doctrine of Election/Predestination brings Joy.
“Predestination and our Election in Christ, is full of sweet, pleasant, and unspeakable comfort to godly persons.” (Article 17 of the 39 Articles of Religion, 2019 BCP, p.778)
Why does being chosen bring joy?
Because I know what it means
to not be chosen by The World.
