Introduction - Temptation
Jesus was Tempted Just as We Are -
Hebrews 4:15 - 15 For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
The Fall of First Adam.
Genesis 3:1-4 - Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, (Doubt) ’You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.(Denial) 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, (Distortion) and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
The Triumph of the Second Adam.
1. Doubt - Matthew 4:3 - And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, (Doubt) command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
2. Denial - Matthew 4:5-6 - Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; (Denial) for it is written, 'He will give his angels charge of you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"
3. Distortion - Matthew 4:8-9 - 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; 9 and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” (Distortion)
The Way of Escape -
I Corinthians 10:13 - No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
What way of escape did Jesus use?
1. Holy Scripture - Matt.4:4,7,10 - It is written, It is written, It is written
What Scripture do I have memorized for my current temptation?
2. Spiritual Disciplines: Almsgiving, Prayer and Fasting - Matt.4:2 - he fasted forty days and forty nights
Almsgiving - 6:3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Prayer - 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Fasting - 6:17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
3. Know Our Enemy - Matt.4:10 - Begone Satan!
John 10:10 - 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
I John 3:8 - The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors…” (The Screwtape Letters, CS Lewis, Preface)
