John 10:22-31 Good Shepherd Sunday.         Sermon Notes

John 10:10-12 - 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 

How do we become Sheep of the Good Shepherd?   

The Gospel

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.

The Security for the Sheep of the Good Shepherd

John 10:27-28 - 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.

Never Perish -

John 10:28 - they shall never perish

Perish - apollymi - death and eternal destruction, eternally lost, ruined

Matthew 10:28 - 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy (apollymi) both soul and body in hell.

Life - John 10:28 - I give them eternal life

Not bios - biological, physical life

Luke 8:14 - 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life (bios)  and their fruit does not mature. 

Life - zoe - abundant, spiritual, eternal life, not bios. 

“What is life?   In all its various levels and types, life is power to act and respond in specific kinds of relations."  (Hearing God, Dallas Willard)
