Romans 10:5-17 Sermon Notes

Intro - Confession

Romans 10:9,10 - because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved.

Context - Apostle Paul is in anguish over Unbelieving Jews.

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ by which we have become the Righteousness of God.

Romans 10:6-8 - 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith (The Gospel) which we preach);

1. Content of our Belief -

Jesus is Lord - Jesus is Yahweh.

Resurrection - Jesus was bodily raised from the grave never to die again.

History - secondary vs primary sources.

The New Testament is made up of the primary historical sources of the Apostles’ eye witness testimony.

2. The Importance of Confessing What We Believe

Parallelism - reminiscent of the Hebrew Poetry

Confess with our lips and Believe in our hearts vs. 9

and

Believe in our hearts and Confess with our lipsvs. 10

Problem - Secret Agent Christians.

Their hesitancy becomes a habit and their habit becomes a heart issue of unbelief.

What we Confess influences what we Believe

and

What we Believe influences what we Confess.

Our Beliefs - are Functional and Aspirational

Matthew 12:34 - For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

And yet we also know that as Believers we stumble

James 3:9,10 - With it (The tongue) we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Story of Wey’s first confession of faith.
