Stands Out – eats my flesh and drinks my blood (6 times in 6 verses)
What is he talking about??! He’s talking about what will become our response to The Gospel – The Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“Jesus’ mystifying words are referring to something that could not be understood until after his death, resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Spirit. …We know from the Synoptic Gospels and Paul’s letters that Jesus commanded us to observe the Eucharist/Holy Communion and that early Christians did indeed do so. Christians then, as now, naturally find reference here to the Eucharist.” (John, The Rev. Dr. Rod Whitacre, p.167, 169)
Sacrament – an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.
Metaphor – an implicit comparison between two essentially unlike things.
What is Jesus referring to? Our hunger.
John 6:27 – Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.
What are we hungry for? Problem – Americans are not hungry.
How do we Come to Jesus/Believe in Jesus?
(Disaster or Discipline)
Disaster is when the World, the Flesh or the Devil hit our lives so hard, and we have no way to personally recover.
Discipline is when we force our physical bodies to do certain activities so that our soul and spirit will feed upon Jesus and grow in His Grace.
Two Categories of Spiritual Discipline:
Abstinence:
Fasting – Do without food
Silence – Do without talking/listening
Solitude – Do without people
Engagement:
Prayer – turn my heart/soul upon Jesus. Matthew 6:6
Study – Holy Scripture
John 6:54 – Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
Worship – whole hearted
