Mark 10:2-16 Sermon Notes
Intro - Why Marriage?
Believers in the Gospel, the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
New Covenant of Grace - 2 Gospel Sacraments and 5 Church Sacraments including - Holy Matrimony
Mark 10:6-9 — But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ 7 ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
2 Genders; male & female
2 Stations; Single & Celibate or Married & Chaste
Contrast of Contexts: World Kingdom of Heaven
Operates by Law Grace
Focused on Individual Christ
Relates to others by Consumer Covenant
Consumer Relationships - “lasts only as long as the vendor meets your needs at cost acceptable to you. If another vendor delivers better services, or the same services, at a better cost, you have no obligation to stay in a relationship to the original vendor. … the individual’s needs are more important than the relationship.”
Covenant Relationships - “these relationships are binding on us. In a covenant, the good of the relationship takes precedence over the immediate needs of the individual.” (The Meaning of Marriage, Kathy & Tim Keller, p.81)
The Four Purposes of Marriage: (2019 BCP, p.202)
1. Procreation - “for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord;”
2. Pal - “for mutual joy, and for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity”
Genesis 2:18 - Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
helper - friend, companion, pal
What is friendship? The Four Loves by CS Lewis
3. Purity - “to maintain purity, so that husbands and wives, with all the household of God, might serve as holy and undefiled.”
I Corinthians 7:2-3 - But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband
4. Praise - “members of the Body of Christ’s kingdom in the family, church, and society, to the praise of his holy Name.”
Marriage in the Salvation Story of Holy Scripture:
Genesis 2:24, Exodus 20:14, Hosea 4:12,
Ephesians 5:31-32 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
Rev. 19:9 - And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”
