Job 42:1-6 Sermon Notes

Who is Job?   A Blameless and upright man who feared God and turned away from evil.    A Believer, a Church Goer.  A wealthy wonderful father.

Job 1:1 - There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. …

Behind the Scenes - Temporal Curtain Pulled Back

Job 1:8-12

Job 1:20-21

Curtain gets pulled back a second time:

Job 2:3-8

Three friends; Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar.

What do the Three Friends Represent?   Darkened Counsel

Job 42:3 -  ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’

Job is quoting the LORD God.

Job 38:1-5 - 2 “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

A Major theme of Job - Comfort/Counsel for those who are suffering.

Comfort and Counsel is either Enlightened or Darkened.

Enlightened by Salvation or Darkened by Satan

Darkened Counsel - Three Friends

Eliphaz Experience Job 4:8

Bildad Tradition Job 8:8

Zophar Legal Job 11:6

Why are these three types of counsel darkened?   Because they were wrongly applied.

Enlightened Counsel - Elihu the son of Barachel (may God bless)

Elihu Jesus Job 33:24

Mark 10:45 - The Son of man came not to be served but to serve and give his life as a Ransom for many.

Elihu is pointing Job to who the LORD God is and what the Lord God does, bring salvation.

And then the LORD God begins to speak to Job out of the whirlwind.  That brings us back to Job’s response in our text this morning.

Job 42:5-6 - 5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you;  6 therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”
