I Corinthians 15:1-11 Sermon Notes
Intro - Story of the Rev. Frank Limehouse
Ancient Creed and Appearances of Risen Christ
Ancient Creed - Conversation between Professor Gary Habermas and Lee Strobel in The Case for Christ, p. 248ff
I Corinthians 15:3-5 - 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
Galatians 1:18-19 - Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit (historeo) Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. 19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.
historeo - visit, investigative inquiry
The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.
II Corinthians 5:21 - For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Appearances of the Risen Christ
I Corinthians 15:5-8 - and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me
More than 500 brothers at one time - 6 minutes on the witness stand would be more than 50 hours of firsthand eyewitness testimony in a court of law. (The Resurrection Factor, Josh McDowell, p.72)
Why is the Resurrection so important?
1. The Resurrection is the Lynchpin of Christianity
Lynchpin - one that serves to hold together parts or elements that exist or function as a unit. Ex. Door Hinge.
2. The Burial of the Dead - 2019 Book of Common Prayer
Collect for the Burial of An Adult, p. 250
Prayer of Committal, p. 261
“In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ …”
